More play with shadow and reflection, lights and mirrors today. 45 minutes of calming and inquisitive play with a young person. The few words spoken were whispered excitedly- it’s funny how changing the light in this way made the young person change the way they spoke with no prompting or instruction from me. #play #playwork #playworker #lightplay #sensoryplay #inclusiveplay #asn #shadow #messyplay
Invitation to draw - an assortment of googly eyes on a blank sheet of paper. Throwing down the eyes adds a bit of drama and playful energy too. Always trying to think of ways to make drawing playful and inviting 🤔 👀👀👀👀👀👀 #play #drawing #playworker #artworker #artist #drawingwithchildren
Fun with reflection, projections and transparencies. 😍🔦 I feel so lucky to have colleagues who bring ideas like this! I have an idea brewing for another version with a particular young person 🤔Ended up pretty spellbound watching one young person fully absorbed in playing with the light and shadows. Check out the video at the end 👽#play #sensoryplay #playwork #projection #lightandshadows #colour #optical
A riff on ‘safety first’. 🐈🐈🐈Drawing is one of my favourite communication tools, especially when working with children who might struggle with face to face interaction. Sitting beside someone and drawing together has been the start of a lot of my relationships with children I’ve worked with. It’s opening a channel of communication with little pressure to interact with the other person. I think because drawing is commonly accepted as a solo activity it means a lot of children seem to feel comfortable sitting alongside me when I’m drawing where they might not be able to cope with me talking to them. I get to show them something about me, they get to show me something about them. Over time this can lead to more collaboration and interaction through the drawing. The child I was with sat alongside me making suggestions whilst I drew this. #drawing #play #playwork #asn #communication #asd #autism #art #artist #comic #inclusiveplay
Posted @withrepost • @theyardscotland "For children and young people who are disabled or have additional support needs, often the world doesn’t tell them it values their instincts, ideas and interests. They have to do a lot of adjusting to fit into spaces that just weren’t created with them in mind. The Yard is a space that exists outside of all those social norms and expectations that can be so disabling to children."⠀ ⠀ In our bio you will find part four of our articles on #inclusiveplay by Max Alexander aka @PlayRadical 🌱🌱🌱🌱 head to the Yard to check out the final article in this series. All about play for the sake of play. #inclusion #inclusiveplay #play #playwork #playground #asn #disability
This week I discovered that dancing with a bucket on their head was somehow both exciting and calming to one young person. They especially liked the resonance of their voice when they were in bucket-mode. Also, this guy is just a one-bucket party. #play #inclusiveplay #sensoryplay #sensoryregulation #playwork #party
Posted @withrepost • @theyardscotland "In my time observing, I noticed something quite unusual about The Yard in relation to these ways of playing. The children who were mostly engaging in solo play weren’t on the outskirts of the space, as they so often are in other spaces. They were using every bit of the space, just as much as the parallel and collaborative players. Those children who prefer or need to play by themselves a lot were just as much a part of the culture and dynamic of the space as any other child." Lots of fun doing Street Arts with @michaelbowdidgeartist yesterday. With some chalk and a lot of creative children we took the idea of a hopscotch, deconstructed and unleashed it onto the streets of Wester Hailes. Last picture a bonus, very flattering, portrait of myself. #play #artworker #youthwork #youthoutreach #playwork #playground #playideas #chalk
This week during observations over two days in a primary school playground I discovered a new mythic and powerful being. His name; Mr Tiddles. Mr Tiddles (not pictured to protect his privacy) is a tyre. He has been deigned special by his slightly unusual colouring and is fiercely guarded and sought after by children. They build him forts and dens. On the first day I was just told about him, on the second I was taken to meet him in a bush with tyres stacked either end for protection where he was ‘resting’. According to staff Mr Tiddles is the source of much conflict. #play #playwork #looseparts #loosepartsplay #imagination #creativity #playground #mrtiddles
